What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a customized restoration that is crafted from impressions taken of your smile and used to cover and protect a damaged or decayed tooth. It’s commonly referred to as a “cap” because of how it fits over a specific area.
Once bonded with dental cement, the artificial tooth prevents any food particles or bacteria from penetrating the vulnerable underlying structure so that it will grow stronger each day.
The Dental Crown Process
When receiving a dental crown at Albright Family Dental, our team will begin by prepping the tooth. This includes clearing out any decayed or damaged portions so that no bacteria remain. Once this is finished, a biocompatible solution is used to fill the tooth and create a tight seal, preventing any harmful particles from reaching the interior.
The tooth will then be altered to create ample space for the dental crown once it is ready. You will receive a temporary restoration that you will need to wear in between appointments while lab technicians create your permanent crown.
After a few weeks, you will return to our dental office to have your temporary crown removed and the permanent one put into place. It will be secured with dental cement so that it does not easily become dislodged or loosened over time.
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown
Dental crowns continue to be one of the most popular restorative options among patients. Although it is never the desire of any dentist to use them; however, they are highly effective in keeping vulnerable teeth safe from further reinfection and harm.
Additional benefits include:
- A restoration that can be customized to match surrounding teeth so that others will be unable to tell the difference between your real and artificial ones
- A versatile approach that allows your dentist to repair many different oral health problems
- Greater protection so that damaged or decayed teeth do not need to be extracted
- Greater comfort and chewing ability
- A longer-lasting restoration that can remain firmly in place for 15+ years if you commit to taking proper care of it with good oral hygiene, routine checkups, and careful food choices
