Undergoing orthodontic treatments used to require years of wire tightening and bulky metal appliances. With advances in clear aligner tray technology, patients now have a more discreet orthodontic treatment option. Invisalign trays are practically invisible. Patients can remove the trays when eating or snagging selfies. Invisalign trays even offer faster cosmetic results than traditional metal braces. If misaligned teeth are causing you embarrassment, we encourage you to learn about the many benefits of Invisalign treatments.
Benefits of Invisalign
To understand the benefits of Invisalign, it is important to remember how traditional braces are applied. Have you noticed that fewer and fewer teenagers’ smiles show the telltale signs of traditional braces? It’s not that fewer teens and adults are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Quite the contrary. Teens, young adults, and older adults are increasingly choosing Invisalign treatments as an alternative because the orthodontic treatments are discreet.
Invisalign treatments are also more comfortable to undergo than traditional metal braces. The wires that pull teeth into better alignment have to be tightened every few months. This process can be very uncomfortable or even mildly painful. Invisalign trays spread those movements out evenly across several months or even years.
Traditional metal braces also come with dietary restrictions. Invisalign treatments have no dietary restrictions, although our office always advises against consuming excessively sugary foods and drinks. Invisalign trays are also easy to clean while metal braces often require special cleaning tools and extra maintenance.
Am I a Candidate?
The vast majority of individuals who seek the life-changing benefits of Invisalign trays are good candidates for the treatments. In very rare circumstances, extreme teeth misalignment may require the use of traditional metal braces to address large gaps between teeth. During your consultation at our Everett dental practice, one of our doctors will determine your candidacy for Invisalign.
Candidates should be willing to visit our office every several weeks for check-ups on your progress. If you have concerns about your teenager wearing the trays for 20 to 22 hours per day (as required), Invisalign offers special trays that record daily compliance through the use of a colored button.
How Do Invisalign Treatments Work?
Once your candidacy for Invisalign has been established, one of our doctors will either make a mold or take digital images of your teeth and jaw. That impression will then be sent to a laboratory that will manufacture custom aligner trays. Once the trays arrive back at our office, you will be given a set number of trays to wear for two or three weeks at a time. Each tray should be worn 20 to 22 hours a day. Each successive tray is slightly straighter than the previous one. As you wear the tray, your teeth will be nudged into better alignment through micro-movements.
If you do experience any inconvenience, it will likely be throughout the first day after placing a new tray. We recommend placing each new tray before you go to sleep so you can sleep off this momentary discomfort. Your trays can be cleaned using water and a toothbrush. Using toothpaste to clean your trays may leave a white film.
If you misplace your tray, please let us know immediately. Maintaining the use of your aligner trays for 20 to 22 hours a day is critical to staying on track with your projected treatment timeline.
